Trail Links and Trail Reports

Opening Day - Uwharrie
03 April 2008
Uwharrie Off Road Vehicle Trails
Located off Forest Road 576, the ORV system offers a variety of topography and scenery. All trails are designated for all ORV’s except a small portion of the Dickey Bell trail located west of SR 6584, which is suitable only for use by ATV’s or motorcycles. Stay on the trail system to help prevent soil erosion and creek sedimentation. Forest roads can be used as trail connectors, but only if the vehicle in operation is STREET LEGAL, meaning full licensing and registration. Persons violating these regulations will be fined according to the law. The Daniel Trail is EXTREMELY DIFICULT, and only experienced, highly skilled operators should attempt this trail.
ORV Trail Fees
$5.00 per day per vehicle
$30.00 per vehicle Annual Pass
(Available at District Ranger Office) |
Uwharrie was a mess on opening day.
Im not a mud fan, but did drive 300 or so miles so I continued to wheel.
Hopefully it is dried out before you guys go.
Huge tree down on Dickey Bell we couldn't move. Probably gone by the time you get there. 2 new parking lots at the top of Falls Dam for the soon to come camping area. While slick no problems there either.
Dutch John was not rutted, but it was slicker than dog snot. Dry day easy climb, we however had to run at it at speed.
Rocky Mtn loop heading towards Kodak has a nice new ledge just prior to it. Pretty interesting climb. THere is a pseudo bypass, but beware for top heavy high lift guys as it presents a roll over hazard on the last bump.
Kodak is very much changed even since closing day in December. There is a new bypass that starts before Kodak and takes you up past the parking area where people spectate. It was challenging even for the very built rigs with the mud. I spectated on that one however.
Due to the amount of mud, we skipped Daniel, not to mention that it really took all day to run what we did anyway. So no new reports there.
Needless to say there was some carnage. Broken shocks new scrapes. The long wheelbase of the JK is going to take a lot for me to get used too. Breakover sucks especially on all those whoops hills throughout the trails on UNF. Most should of been flattened out by my new rockhard skids, so you should be good
I've ran BFG MT's on my TJ for over 3 years and wheeled all over the country in very rocky areas and never had a problem. I sidewall slashed one straight through and have sidewall cuts on two others making them unreliable on my JK's stock tires in less than an hour before ending wheeling at UNF. I am purchasing the BFG MT KM2 in hopes the stronger sidewalls are better.
I found alot of things on the JK I want to improve however, so I have a clear picture now of what I want to finish with. To say the least for you guys wheeling JK's in a TJ rich group, you might want to think about buying a spydertrax JK to TJ bolt pattern spacer in the event you go through more than one tire and need to borrow someone else's spare.
Enjoy the goop if it is still muddy!

| Brown Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle Area |
The Brown Mountain off-highway vehicle (OHV) area offers visitors the only area in Pisgah that is open to OHVs, including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), 4 wheel drive vehicles, and trail bikes. This area offers 34 miles of rugged trails from March 16 until January 1. All 34 trails are open to trail bikes, while over 14 miles are open to ATVs. Most trails are not wide enough for two-way traffic, thus a one-way trail system is used. The trails numbers can only be seen when traveling in the correct direction. There is a daily usage fee of $5 or you can purchase a season pass for $30. There is a trail map available from the Grandfather Ranger District at 828-652-2144.
All riders must stay on designated routes as marked with the symbols showing the type of OHV you’re driving. |

In for a bumpy ride

DAILY NEWS STAFF
The J'Ville Jeepers are revving up their engines to search for any thrill seekers who enjoy having fun and establishing friendships with other local jeep enthusiasts.
15 active members from Jacksonville make up the only all jeep club in Eastern North Carolina. Members organize trail rides and rock crawling. They also sponsor events like an off-road vehicle trail ride at Uwharrie National Forest in Troy and a Mud Day event at the Children's Museum in Wilmington.
Established in December 2006, the group is very open to welcoming new members.
Mark Saye, a member of the board of directors, said that users are found mainly through the internet, but they also spread the word by passing out business cards and placing them on windshields of jeeps, as well as by word of mouth.
"Someone can register on the Web site and become a user of the forum," said Saye. "If they decide to become a member, there is a link to the application for them to fill out and also a link for payment through Paypal.
"They can also pay someone from the board of directors, as well as give them the application. Dues are $25 a year and are renewed on the day they become a member."
There are also a few guidelines that one must follow in order to become a "Jeeper."
"To be eligible, they must have a Jeep and follow the some basic common "Tread Lightly" principles when off-roading," said Saye. "Basically, not purposely destroying anything and to stay on the trails. Of course, they must follow state and federal laws pertaining to driving and environmental preservation."
The club's website, www.jvillejeepers.com with 102 registered members, is where they primarily interact and showcase the various trips and events that they host.
Sponsors such as Big Wheel Off Road of Hubert provides the club time to fix usually expensive damages without charge.
"They let us come and use their tools, mainly bigger tools that we normally wouldn't have," said member Dominic Lombardo. "People who aren't as mechanically inclined can get together; it's an excellent opportunity for them to learn."
Saye said that females are also just as welcome to join the club. They are given the nickname "Barbie Jeepers," but it doesn't mean that they can't keep up with the men on trail rides and rock crawlings.
J'Ville Jeepers also has monthly social gatherings called "meet-and-greets," where existing members meet with potential members from internet chat groups to introduce themselves and provide more information about member procedures and requirements.
"We bring people from the Web sites to actually meet and find out what kind of jeep that they drive," said Lombardo. "We also have raffles and ramp drives."
"We wanted it to be a member driven club," said J'Ville Jeeper Jeremy Benest. "Paid members decide together if the club succeeds or fails because it's a group effort."
